There are no substitutes of being active

when it comes to keeping your bones, muscle and joints healthy.  But there can be times when injuries happen during sports or while exercising and such mishaps often involve the knee, ankle and shoulder.

Can you relate to the above-mentioned claims? Regular exercising is quite important but you might end up injuring yourself while doing certain workout sets or stretches.  Having a wrong posture during exercise often leads to injury.

Did you know knee joint is the largest joint in your body? Here’s a breakdown for you.

The basic anatomy of knee joint and the most common injuries:

Bones: Knee joint usually has three bones such as-

Distal part of femur (thigh bone)

Proximal part of Tibia (shinbone)

Patella (knee cap).

Articular Cartilage: It is a thick, slippery substance that covers the surface of the knee joint. It helps the knee to move smoothly.

Meniscus: This acts like cushion which remains between the shinbone and the thigh bone. Meniscus acts  like a shock absorber and distribute the stress uniformly over cartilage.

ACL and PCL: The anterior cruciate ligament and the posterior cruciate ligament control your leg’s forward and backward movement respectively.

LCL and MCL: Lateral collateral ligament and medial collateral ligament stabilize joint during the side to side movement.

Tendons: The quadriceps muscle attaches to the knee cap via its tendon in front of the thigh.
